If you’ve ever struggled with tricky English words, you’re not alone!
Some words in English are notoriously hard to pronounce, even for native speakers.
In this blog post, we’ll go through 21 of the most challenging English words and teach you how to pronounce them like a pro.
Whether you’re preparing for an exam, improving your accent, or just want to sound more fluent, mastering these words is a great place to start.
- World – Tricky due to the “R” and “L” sounds. Make sure your tongue curves to produce the correct sound.
- Sixth – Don’t say "six" – it’s "six-th." Pronounce it slowly as “six-th” to get it right. Then, work your way up and pronounce it more quickly.
- Comfortable – It’s not "com-fort-a-ble." The correct pronunciation is "comf-tur-bul."
- Squirrel – This word has two syllables: "squir-rel." Practice saying it quickly but clearly.
- Salmon – This fish is pronounced "sam-un" (without the “L”).
- Queue – Pronounced as "Q" (A queue is simply a line of people, common in British English)
- Vehicle – Sounds like “vee-ih-kul,” not “veh-i-cle.” The 'H' is silent.
- Answer – Make sure you don’t pronounce the "W"! It’s “an-ser.”
- Sword – The "W" is also silent.
- Months – This word is pronounced “muh-nths.”
- Rural – A tricky word for native speakers too; it’s pronounced “roo-ral.”
- Epitome – Many people say “ep-i-tome”, but it’s “ep-it-o-me.”
- Island – This word drops the "S" and is pronounced “eye-land.”
- Aisle – Pronounced as “eye-ul,” not "ice-lee."
- Debris – Don't pronounce the 'S'. The correct pronunciation is “de-bree.”
- Colleague – It’s “call-eeg", not "call-eeg". Watch the word emphasis.
- Entrepreneur – A tricky one,.. it's pronounced “ahn-truh-pruh-nur.”
- Though, Through, Thought – These three words can be confusing, as each has its own pronunciation:
- Though = "tho"
- Through = "throo"
- Thought = "thawt"
- Pronunciation – Careful here: there is no "U" in this word. Don't say "pronounciation" - it's "pro-NUN-ciation.
Master these difficult words, and you’ll improve your overall English pronunciation and sound more fluent.
