In this blog post, we'll look at 10 important English words related to the topic of travel, which will help you communicate effectively, travel confidently, and talk about your experiences. 

Whether you're an experienced traveler or leaving your home country for the first time, knowing these 10 English words is super important if you want to improve your travel vocabulary.

#1: To embark

To begin a journey, usually on a ship or airplane. 

  • Next summer they will embark on a trip of a lifetime.
  • They embarked on their trip to America with high hopes.

 

#2: Travel Companion

Somebody whom you travel with.

  • She always liked to have a travel companion because she was scared of flying. 
  • It’s nice to have a travel companion to share your experiences with.

#3: Leg Room

The space where you put your legs when you are seated.

  • The passenger asked for a seat with extra leg room because he had long legs.
  • I hate traveling on small planes, there is never enough leg room!

 

#4: Exchange Rate

The value of one currency compared with the value of another.

  • The exchange rate between American dollars and British pounds is awful at the moment!  
  • When taking a trip abroad, you should check the exchange rate before you travel!

#5: Backpacker 

A backpacker is a person who travels or hikes carrying all of their belongings in a backpack.

  • There are lots of places in the mountains for backpackers to stay for the night. 
  • Being a backpacker is the cheapest way to travel across Europe.

#6: Staycation

When you take a staycation, you take a vacation in your own city. 

  • I finally have some time off work… I think I’m going to take a staycation. 
  • He decided not to go on vacation in Mexico. Instead, he’s taking a staycation and will explore his own city. 
     

#7: To go sightseeing

To go sightseeing means to visit different places in a city, normally on vacation. 

  • I loved sightseeing in New York. I went to Central Park, Brooklyn, and the Empire State Building. 
  • On our trip to London, we’re going to go sightseeing. 


#8: Panorama

A view of a landscape or a large area.

  • From the top of the mountain, we had a panorama of the entire valley.
  • The rooftop restaurant offered a 360-degree panorama of the city skyline. 

 

#9: To take a stroll

When you take a stroll, you take a slow and relaxing walk. 

  • Let’s take a stroll along the beach.
  • We took a stroll through Central Park when we visited New York. 

#10: Layover

When you have to change planes and spend time in another airport, you have a layover.

  • Unfortunately our flight was delayed so we had a long layover at London Heathrow Airport.
  • When I traveled from New York to Australia, I had a layover in Los Angeles.
